Sealants

Sealants are a great preventative measure used to protect your teeth before a cavity forms on the occlusal (chewing) surface of your teeth. The chewing surfaces of your posterior (back) teeth form with pits and valleys (sometimes called fissures) which are easily accessible for bacteria and microscopic food particles. Sealants are designed to prevent the intrusion of bacteria and other debris into the fissures on the occlusal surface of teeth. Sealants are resin coatings that are applied to the pits and fissures on the biting surface of your teeth. This coating creates a barrier to keep decay out of these hard to clean areas, thereby helping to prevent cavities.

We might recommend a dental sealant for children as soon as their permanent teeth erupt. Once a tooth has been attacked by bacteria and a cavity forms, a sealant cannot be placed. If an adult presents with cavity free posterior teeth with deep fissures and pits, Drs. James, Robert or Luke Stephens may recommend a sealant as one way to help protect against future decay.

If taken care of properly and monitored by a dental professional, sealants should last between 5 and 10 years. Keep your sealants clean by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day.

At our Evanston dental office, our patient’s health is our number one priority, so we make sure to use a BPA free sealant.
