The Importance of Teeth Cleaning in Evanston

One of the keys to maintaining your oral health, as well as your overall health, is to have regular cleanings performed by your dentist. Yes, daily brushing and flossing are essential first steps to prevent the buildup of harmful plaque and tartar, but self-care at home can only take you so far. To maximize your oral health, it is essential to have your teeth professionally cleaned regularly.

We encourage you to read on as we provide additional information and answer some of your basic questions about teeth cleaning.

What exactly is professional dental cleaning?

As stated briefly, professional teeth cleaning appointments are made with your dentist to have your teeth and gum line thoroughly cleaned by the dentist and hygienist. During the dental procedure, you’ll receive both preventive and diagnostic care. Preventive care includes removing plaque and tartar as well as stain removal.

The hygienist will also polish your teeth shortly before or after the dentist does an examination of the condition of your teeth. This routine dental procedure can also include the cleaning of dentures or partial dentures, and a fluoride treatment.

Diagnostic treatment includes evaluating your gum tissue, oral cancer screening, and dental x-rays to look for tooth decay. If serious problems are detected and further treatment is needed, your dentist may refer you to an outside specialist.

How long does a teeth cleaning take?

A dental hygiene routine cleaning is scheduled for 60 minutes. This includes a brief examination by your dentist. Generally, the better your overall oral health, the less time a cleaning will take.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

We believe you should have this done every six months, and that’s not just our opinion. The American Dental Association agrees with us and recommends getting a professional cleaning at least twice a year.

What are the main benefits of teeth cleaning?

Here are a few of the ways you’ll benefit from getting a twice-yearly cleaning.

  • Reduces the risk of cavities – Cavities are caused by bacteria, and a buildup of bacteria is more likely when a lot of plaque and tartar has accumulated on your teeth. During a professional cleaning, the plaque, tartar, and bacteria are removed, reducing the likelihood of developing cavities.
  • Helps prevent gum disease – Regular professional cleaning helps prevent this common problem, which if left unchecked can lead to bleeding and receding gums.
  • Helps detect oral cancers – At least one person dies every hour from some form of oral cancer in the U.S. Many of these deaths could be prevented through early detection and treatment.
  • Lowers the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease – It may surprise you, but your mouth is the key to your overall health and having good oral hygiene has been linked to a lower risk of both diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • Provides a chance to look for other issues – While examining your teeth and gums, your dentist can look for other dental problems as well, such as TMJ and sleep apnea, and help provide the proper treatment to bring these issues under control before they become major problems.

Between appointments, you should continue regular brushing and flossing to prevent a large amount of plaque or tartar from building up and to keep your mouth healthy.

Preventative Dentistry Evanston, IL

Prevention is the cornerstone of our dental practice. At our Evanston dentist office we believe that the best method for protecting your smile is to use excellent preventative care. Our kind and caring staff are here to coordinate with you and ensure that your smile and you get the best care possible.

The best preventative care begins at home and continues in the dental office with a routine prophylaxis (dental cleaning). Your hygienist will clean and polish your teeth, take any needed x-rays, take gum measurements, and do a fluoride treatment. The x-rays help our Evanston dentists diagnose tooth decay between teeth and below the gum line, as well as allowing them to look for any bone loss. The gum measurements that your hygienist takes allows our dental staff to evaluate the health of your gums. You can learn more about why we take x-rays and gum measurements in our blog. Based on your current dental care and oral health, your hygienist will discuss in-office and at-home options to help you keep your smile in perfect health.

Our doctors are at the forefront of the dental field. Through continuing education courses, they discover new methods and new treatments to help keep your smile healthy. Both doctors work closely with all of our hygienists to provide the best that dentistry has to offer.

In addition to routine prophylaxis (cleaning), our office offers the following preventative services:
