ITero Scanner: Information and Benefits

At Stephens Dentistry, we are constantly staying up to date with the latest technology so that you can have better dental experiences and improved results. That’s why our family dentist in Evanston uses the iTero Scanner to make digital impressions for nightguards, retainers, braces, and other dental and orthodontic needs. Read on to discover all the benefits of the iTero Scanner.

What is the iTero Scanner?

The iTero is a digital scanner that takes digital images of your mouth – about 6,000 images per second, to be precise. The result is a high-resolution, 3D, interactive image of your entire mouth. A hand-held wand with a small camera is passed over your teeth and gums, and the process can be started and stopped as needed. The scan only takes a few minutes and will allow you to see your dentition from all angles.

It also has other specific capabilities that can solve other oral issues aside from straightening teeth, such as helping with teeth grinding.

Why is the iTero Scanner Preferred?

Before the iTero scanner was used, physical impressions had to be taken, which could be very uncomfortable. No one likes goop or gagging, and physical mold-taking can be uncomfortable for many patients. Physical impressions also have room for error and sometimes have to be taken multiple times if the impression isn’t sufficient. They are not as accurate as the scans that result from the iTero scanner; the iTero shows a much more detailed and precise visual of your teeth and mouth, which results in better-fitting dental appliances.

The old method of impressions also took much longer to make, as they often had to be sent out to a lab and were sometimes broken or misplaced in the process.

Interactive Experience

The iTero intraoral scanner is a much more enjoyable experience not only for dentists and behind-the-scenes work, but for children and adults alike. Not only is the actual scanning experience quick, easy, and effortless, but you will be able to track your entire dental journey digitally. You’ll be able to watch your progress and see what your dentist is talking about in 3D so you’ll never be left in the dark.

The scanner takes the guesswork out of everything; and the Invisalign outcome simulator can show you what your mouth and smile will look like after your Invisalign treatment is over.
